Advice for Nonprofits: How to Achieve Fundraising Success
For most individuals fundraising is a mystery that is as unpredictable as the weather.
However, it is possible to become a fundraising force of nature if you understand
and apply a few proven strategies of fundraising success.
Strategy #1: Know Your Donors
As you know, individuals are the backbone of nonprofit support. Ninety percent
of funding comes from individuals. Therefore, a donor list should contain more
information than a person's email, mailing address or phone number. You should
take the time to learn as much as possible about each donor - their interests,
passions, hobbies, lifestyles, favorite sports teams, etc. Your interest in people
will be evident in your marketing and in the way you treat your donors.
Strategy # 2: Help Donors Find Personal Fulfillment
People want to make a difference. They might achieve personal fulfillment by
supporting your cause or your organization. If you find a way to help people
solve their problems and find a great deal of satisfaction through charity work,
they will be more willing to jump on board and make a donation. This way they
will feel good about themselves while making the world a better place. Your job
is to come up with a creative strategy to show the need for donations. Give your
donors the most compelling reasons to contribute to your cause.
Strategy # 3: Respect Your Donors
Your marketing materials can say all the right words and tell donors how important
they are to you. But it's not enough...You should take the concrete steps to back up
your statements and prove to them that you are being sincere. These statements
should come straight from your heart. In addition, you should ensure that everyone
in your organization who deals with donors should pay close attention to them. Every
donor or volunteer should feel special or unique.
