The Easiest Way to Raise Money for Your Business
Dear Business Owner:
What do you think is the best way to raise money? Here it is - don't spend it!
Let me assure you that if entrepreneurs could recover all the time and money
they waste, our GNP would soar. To win the game, you need to be careful with
your money. You need to spend on things that will eventually contribute to your
success, not on what will make you feel better about yourself. So, before you sign
that check or swipe that credict card, ask yourself: "Will this bring me more business?"
Based on my experience, here are a few of the most common ways business
owners waste money...
1. Custom logos, fancy letterheads and other icons of success.
I have a suggestion: Why don't you design your own logo using
some of the templates that come packaged with your word processing
software. They include matching business cards, letterhead, envelopes
and invoices. You can find templates in the Project Gallery of Microsoft Word
or the Template Chooser in Apple's pages. Need more choices? HP.com and
Avery.com also offer free templates.
2. Fancy offices.
This one is easy. If you don't need a formal office, don't pay for one.
3. Fancy website, brochure, or ad.
In the beginning, good enough is usually good enough.
4. Basing your marketing strategy based on what you think is wonderful.
There is a strong possiblity that your customers are not like you at all.
What you should do is research your market thoroughly. What do your
customers read? What do they eat? What do they watch on TV? Then
you should craft your message based on what appeals to them, not
to you.
5. Underestimating the competition.
Interestingly, some people think they don't have any... If you don't
understand your competition, you do not understand your
market.
6. Thinking that your product or service is what sells.
Here is the sad truth: A great marketing strategy beats
a great product every time. Business owners can go on and
on about their wonderful products or services. The ones who
succeed spend their time scheming about who's going to
to place an order and how they are going to reach them.
Products don't sell. Marketing does.
